Ice Skating for Beginners: Tips for Your First Glide on the Ice

Ice skating is a magical winter activity that combines fun, fitness, and the thrill of gliding over ice. Whether you're looking forward to visiting the scenic and brand-new Leavenworth Ice Rink, or trying skating for the first time anywhere, this guide will help you get started. With the right preparation and mindset, you'll be gliding confidently in no time!

What to Wear for Ice Skating

Dressing appropriately is key to staying comfortable and safe while skating at the outdoor Leavenworth Ice Rink. Here’s what you need:

1. Warm, Layered Clothing

  • Wear flexible, moisture-wicking layers to stay warm without overheating. This includes long underwear for your legs.
  • A thermal base layer, fleece, sweater, and a light jacket such as a lightweight down puffy jacket work best.

2. Comfortable, Thick Socks

  • Although you want a snug fit for your ice skates, avoid overly thick socks that can make skates too tight. A single pair of warm, cushioned socks is ideal.

3. Gloves or Mittens

  • Protect your hands from the cold and provide some cushioning if you fall.

4. A Hat or Headband

  • Keeps your ears warm without obstructing vision like a hood might.  Earmuffs are a fun and festive option as well.

5. Skates That Fit Well

  • Rental skates should fit snugly but not be too tight. Lace them securely for good ankle support but make sure it fits your feet and is not too snug because of overly thick socks.

How to Stay Balanced on the Ice

The first few steps on ice can feel wobbly, but with a little practice, you’ll find your balance. Here’s how:

1. Start with the Right Posture

  • Keep knees slightly bent and weight slightly forward.
  • Avoid leaning back, as this can lead to falls.

2. Walk Before You Glide

  • Take small steps like a penguin to get used to the ice.
  • Once comfortable, push off gently with one foot and glide on the other.
  • If you are in figure skates with a toe pick in the front, which are a few jagged “teeth” in the metal blade, make sure you don’t inadvertently catch these on the ice.
  • Stay close to the boards for any needed support.

3. Use Your Arms for Balance

  • Extend arms slightly out to the sides to maintain balance.
  • Avoid clenching fists or crossing arms over your body.

4. Practice Stopping

  • The easiest way to stop as a beginner is the “snowplow” or “pizza slice” stop where you gently turn your toes inward to form a V-shape.
  • Point toes slightly inward and press your skates gently into the ice.
  • You can also gently skate into the boards to slow down.

5. Know How to Fall and Get Up Safely

  • If you feel yourself falling, try to land on your side or bottom rather than straight backward.
  • To get up, turn your hands and knees towards the ice, place one foot up, then push up with the other.

Extra Tips for a Great Skating Experience

  • Stay Relaxed: Tension makes it harder to balance, so keep movements smooth and controlled.
  • Take Breaks: If your feet get tired, step off the ice for a short rest.
  • Fuel up: Eat some snacks and hydrate and of course a warm beverage will always hit the spot.
  • Have Fun!: Enjoy the experience and don’t worry about perfection. Everyone starts somewhere!

Now that you know the basics, it’s time to hit the ice! See you out there next winter at the Leavenworth Ice Rink!
